The Chernobyl nuclear disaster shocked everyone in 1986, when reactor 4 of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant exploded. Fires raged for a week, spewing deadly radioactive material across the USSR and Europe. The nuclear fallout was unlike anything we’d ever seen before. And, despite eventual evacuation and a 1,000 square mile exclusion zone, we’re still counting the cost.
How dangerous and devastating the Chernobyl disaster was. What happened to the people living in Pripyat and the other surrounding towns? And will the region ever be safe again?
